EXAMPLES OF DIAMOND AND cBN WHEELS NAMING

Positions of abrasive grain layer

These are positions of abrasive grain layer that are attached to the metal core, and the GRAIN LAYER itself. Positions of abrasive grain layer attached to the metal core, and classification signs, are regulated by JIS.

CLASSIFICATION SIGNS - POSITIONS FIGURES DEFINITIONS
1 PERIPHERAL POSITION The abrasive grain layer is attached to the periphery of metal core and spread over its entire thickness. The width of axial direction of the abrasive grain layer is longer than the depth of its radial direction. Some of the wheels widths are the same, or shorter than, the length of their depth. As of this definition we do not regard wheel hubs as part of the wheels thickness.@
2 SIDE FACEPOSITION The abrasive grain layer is attached to the side face of the wheel, and it is extended towards the center from the wheelfs periphery. Radial length of the abrasive grain layer doesnft have to extend across the whole side face of wheel, but it should be longer than the depth of axial direction. The abrasive grain layer is attached
to the side face of the wheel which is usually used for grinding.
3 BILATERAL POSITION The abrasive grain layer is attached to both sides of the wheel and it is extended towards the center from the wheelfs periphery. Radial length of the abrasive grain layer doesnft have to extend across the whole side face of wheel, but it is longer than the depth of axial direction.
4 WHEELS HAVINGINWARDLY SLOPINGOR ROUNDED ABRA-SIVE GRAIN LAYER This classification sign is indicative of the abrasive grain layers applied to shapes of versatile wheels no. 2, 6, 11, 12, and 15. The side face of abrasive grain layer has a protrusion or an arc extending from a high position on the periphery to the wheel's lower center.
5 WHEELS HAVINGOUTWARDLY SLOPING OR ROUNDED ABRASIVE GRAIN LAYER This classification sign is indicative of the abrasive grain layers attached to the side face of versatile wheels no. 2, 6,11,12, and 15. The abrasive layer on the side face has a protrusion or an arc extending from a low position on the wheelfs periphery towards its higher center.
6 ABRASIVE GRAIN LAYER ON PART OF THE PERIPHERY Although abrasive grain layer is attached to the metal core periphery, itfs not extended to the whole width of metal core, and does not reach each side, either.
7 ABRASIVE GRAIN LAYER ON PART OF SIDE FACE Abrasive grain layer is attached to the metal corefs side face, but it is not spread to the periphery. This is not a matter of whether or not the abrasive grain layer reaches the center.
8 GRINDSTONE This wheel consists of only abrasive grains.
9 CORNER POSITION The abrasive grain layer is a part of what is attached to wheelfs periphery. Abrasive grain layer is attached to one of the corners, but it is not extended to any others.
10 INTERNAL CIRCUM-FERENCE POSITION MODIFICATION This position indicates that the abrasive grain layer is attached to the metal corefs internal circumference.
